The Face (2012)
Cuban newspaper Granma cut out
38,5 x 59 cm

The work “The Face” takes official propaganda material from “Granma2 and subjects it to a process of removal and aesthetic reconfiguration that questions the dominant narrative. By displaying this single page of the newspaper, it creates a sense of precariousness and exposure, inviting reflection on the vulnerability of state discourse and the human dimension reflected in the face.

The fragility and symbolic loneliness emanating from both the installation and Castro’s downcast expression can be interpreted as a representation of the decay or guilt surrounding the leader’s public image, suggesting that behind the propagandistic power lies a profound vulnerability. Positioned at the beginning of the second room dedicated to the Cuban press, the work serves as a prelude, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a critical narrative of the media establishment.
